I love the little solutions, the lifehacks, that can instantly give you a lift and make your life a better place. Complex systems, discipline and confidence are great, and I can take you there too. But let’s start with the little shiz, like downing a liter of water as soon as you wake up.
You should follow up with my awesome breakfast shake that is one of the healthiest drinks/foods you could ever use to kickstart your day. But start simple.
How much water do you need a day?
I didn’t drink enough water, you probably don’t drink enough. Nobody does unless they really put their mind to it. The old rule that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day isn’t really helpful either.
Just drink two or three liters and you won’t be far off what you need. Drink one at the start of the day in one hit and then keep yourself topped up. If you drink sugary soft drinks then just try and witch out some of them for straightforward water and your body will thank you for it.
Eight hours without water is just too much
But just imagine not drinking anything for eight hours when you’re up and about. No coffee, no tea, no juice, nothing. You’d be parched. That’s exactly what happens when you’re asleep.
Sure, your metabolism slows down when you’re asleep and it’s not quite the same. But when you wake up, you’re groggy and your brain isn’t working, it’s largely down to dehydration.
You can fix that drymouth, groggy brain and even jumpstart your system by keeping a bottle next to your bed. Room temperature is way better for you than water straight from the fridge as it won’t be such a shock to your system.
It will also do the following things for you:
1. Water will rehydrate your body
You are absolutely dehydrated when you wake up. Drinking water will help carry Oxygen round your body and it will even help muscle production if you’re working hard in the gym.
2. Water gets your metabolism moving
Stuffing food down your throat first thing in the morning just isn’t the way to do it. It’s a cold start for your system. Water is a gentle way to let your body know it’s time to get moving and can boost your metabolism by 24%.
3. Water helps flush the toxins from your system
Your body produces toxins even while you sleep. Getting enough clean fluid in your system reduces the load on your kidneys, dilutes your urine and helps clean out your body.
4. Water wakes your brain up
Your brain is 76% water and that can deplete during the night. If you don’t get enough water then you can be drowsy, suffer from headaches and you just don’t feel sharp. Half the people that just don’t feel awake until their second cup of coffee could actually get the same effect without the caffeine.
